You might have to squint to see it (or click on the picture to enlarge it), but there are THREE double-decker buses in this photograph. Or, as Danny and Jonah would have it, a triplé doublé.

A note on British cuisine

It turns out that the British do not have a taste for heat in their food (or, as Mordu would say, for flavor - ahem - flavour). We went to buy a bottle of Frank's hot sauce at the supermarket and the only one they sold was so small we had to laugh. Instead, we bought regular black pepper. Read carefully...it says "TRY TIP: Why not try adding flavour to savoury dishes?" Indeed, England, why not?

Starbucks! This looks just like an American Starbucks, except for the large double-decker bus in front (and the fact that it's run by French folks and patronized by British folks). Since there is free wi-fi here, and we have yet to set up internet, this is currently a hot spot for us on weekends.

Value-4-Money sells everything you could ever need for your apartment. They have supplied us with pots and various other odds and ends.

Thank goodness we didn't have to go too long without an Asian grocer! We are fully stocked with noodles, tofu, and dumplings.

Our neighborhood's public library. True, I spend all day in the British Library and Mordu spends his time in various libraries and archives, but this one supplies leisure reading and DVDs.

Welcome to the Blog

In spring semester of 2012, Mordu traveled to London to undertake dissertation research on mathematics education and religion in early modern England. Rachel, who loves Earl Grey tea and Jane Austen novels and Mordu, came along. She is working on her final comprehensive exam in her PhD program in Ancient Judaism. This blog is an experiment. We're hoping it will be a fun way to share pictures and anecdotes about our experience with friends and family back home. And no, we have no expectations that anyone read it regularly. In fact, we're not sure yet whether we will be good at updating it regularly. And no, we don't think of it as a substitute for properly keeping in touch. We promise to call home!
